SUCCESS STORY – “A Lump of a Life”
At Animal Medical Centre we are passionate about assisting those patients who really need a helping hand at life. We commonly see animals who are in desperate need of specialty treatment, but due to hard economic times their owners simply cannot afford the care they require. This is where we step in…
The patient was Oscar, a 7 year old male Rottweiler owned by an elderly lady in a wheelchair. The lump our vet examined on the day was the size of a basketball and was growing rapidly on Oscar’s abdomen between his legs. Surgery was necessary for continued wellbeing of the dog. He was unable to walk and had lost his quality of life. In any other circumstance Specialty Surgery would have been recommended but the owner simply could not afford to treat the dog at all.
Other vets had seen Oscar for his condition and due to the owners financial situation were reluctant to continue treatment. The owner was electing to have him euthanised as treatment costs had become to much to fathom.
Much to the owners surprise, Dr Pandher offered to perform the surgery free of charge and continue his treatment without payment to further Oscar’s life.
The next day Oscar was admitted to the hospital for surgery. We were completely excising the whole lump and keeping him in the clinic for post operative care. The surgery was very strenuous with many major blood vessels surrounding and feeding the mass. Removal was not easy. After a very successful day in theatre Oscar was sent to post op for recovery and the lump was examined.
The lump weighed in at a staggering 6.5kg (the same as a small dog). Oscar would now be able to live a normal life.
After a long recovery in clinic Oscar was sent home to his owner as a much happier dog. He is now running around and playing again, living life like a dog should for the first time in months.
This is one of the many life saving surgeries that Dr Pandher has generously performed for the cause of Animal Wellbeing.
